Discovering new bands and musicians is the best part about being human. Your ear catches a second or two of a melody and it stays with you. On a busy Friday night in St. Louis where every club, venue or theater are filing in with people coming to listen and enjoy great music, the Old Rock House in downtown St. Louis was one of them. Having never heard Jocelyn & Chris Arndt live before I wondered if it would live up to the sound I had playing on my iTunes. It wasn't a packed house, and the dance floor remained untouched for the entire night. Such is the reality of playing music and traveling to places that may have never heard of you, Jocelyn and Chris took the stage. Sometimes it takes a while to know you have discovered something incredible, in this case it was a pleasure and surprise that immediately my ears perked up and felt myself drawn to the floor.

Chris Arndt's playful riffs to start the show immediately told me just how well he knew the guitar, it had me tapping my feet before Jocelyn even sang a word. Chris Arndt has a charisma on stage that cannot be described unless you are their live to see it. Playing in a small room you would think Chris would cater more to that ambiance but he does not. What he did was play like he would if there was 1 person in the crowd, or 10, 100, thousands. Without a care in the world he just played you felt the passion come off of Chris Arndt's body song after song. Chris also lent his voice to a much slower song in the night, 'Bad Business' alongside her sister and combined the two were incredible. Soft, quiet, and yet that melody and chorus are stuck in my head.

Jocelyn Arndt (vocals) was another revelation. At such a young age she commanded the stage and was fearless. All through the night moving and grooving, Jocelyn danced to the melodies of her brothers guitar. Jocelyn on the microphone was a whole other beast. She had deep and soft rasp when she went in her lower register that sucked me in to every song. The best description to Jocelyn's voice is that of the legendary Janice Joplin. When she would belt out some of the notes I could hear a little bit of Joplin in her voice. Even with that said it never took away from the performance. In fact it enhanced it, made me appreciate what I was special. I enjoyed the night with the band, became a fan and also a supporter.

Jocelyn & Chris Arndt are a dynamic force ready to explode into your ears. If they are ever in your town for a gig not hesitate to buy a ticket to their show and enjoy yourself. You will find yourself humming to the tune of one of their songs on your car ride home.
